11 April: Higher seminar in Rethinking research practices in Art, Technology and Design

Welcome to the next higher seminar with the writer and researcher Elisabeth Hjorth, on April 11, 2-4.30pm at Konstfack (room: Wickman), where she will present her on-going research project The Double Bind. The Novel as (peace)negotiation”. At the heart of the project is the relation between writing and violence/ non- violence. Through her artistic practice Hjorth investigates the premises that conditions writing in its different forms and representations. The aim of the project is to examine and perform a writing practice, which with Gayatri Spivak’s concept ”the Double Bind” is to be understood as a negotiation.

For the presentation at the seminar Hjorth has taken Marlene van Niekkers novel Memorandum. A Story with Paintings as a staring point to reflect on what writing as responsibility might mean, how the writer can (or must) deal with voices – her own and others –and not the least about the relationship between responsibility and the boundaries of writings.

Discussant at the seminar is Marie Silkeberg who is a poet, translator, works with film poetry and is a Guest Professor at the Department for Study of Culture, The University of Southern Denmark.

Elisabeth Hjorth is a writer, critic and PhD in Ethics. She is a researcher at Konstfack, and her project "The Double Bind. The Novel as (peace)negotiation" is financed by the Swedish Research Council. She is also a guest teacher at Konstfack with the course "The Negotiations of Writing. Conflict and Responsibility in Text". Last year she presented her thesis Förtvivlade läsningar. Litteratur som motstånd och läsning som etik/ Despairing Readings. Literature as Resistance and Reading as Ethics at Uppsala University.

Prior to the seminar Hjorth asks you to engage with the following texts written by her:

Memorandum - responsibility in place. The undertaking of a conversation.

American Tomboy

The texts are distributed by petra.bauer@konstfack.se

We have a limited number of places, so please send an email to petra.bauer@konstfack.se if you want to participate.

The higher seminar series aim to provide a platform for a continuous and dynamic exchange on matters pertaining to research within Konstfack at large – senior researchers, faculty, practitioners, doctoral candidates and students – as well as with students, researchers and practitioners in affiliated fields and institutions. The higher seminar series is open to the public.

By “higher seminar” we refer to a format where an invited seminar presenter, such as doctoral candidates, researchers and other experts, provides material(s) in advance, which should be carefully reviewed by participants before each specific seminar session. The seminar is focused on a critical encounter and discussion on the provided material(s).
