Visual Empowerment – Exploring Comics’ Ability to Strengthen Readers and Communities

Marja dush

This research project examines both practical and thematical aspects of empowerment within the comics’ medium, studying how comics have been used by different communities and authors in the past and present with an intent to visually empower the reader in different ways. It will analyse the creative decision-making both from source material and interviews with creators, simultaneously trying out new knowledge through the practice of comic making. What is perceived as empowering to who? And why? And how?

Bitte Andersson is a comic artist, illustrator, and low-budget film maker. Both her graphic novel “At the end of the Rainbow” (2017) and her feature film “Dyke Hard” (Berlinale 2015) are collaborative projects involving queer communities in Stockholm. Between her BA in Fine art 2006 and her MA in Storytelling 2012, both at Konstfack, she opened a queer and feminist bookshop / community center called Hallongrottan, that organized free cultural events and produced amateur TV. Her field of illustration is mostly information campaigns for LGBTQI+ organizations and trade unions. She also has a background in physical special effects at the low-budget film production company Troma Entertainment Inc.
