Application and Entry Requirements

How to apply to Doctoral Education in Artistic Practice in Visual, Applied and Spatial Arts.

Please note! Admission to doctoral studies starting in 2024 is closed. The next call is planned for 2025.

When it is possible to apply to Konstfack's doctoral education, the positions will be announced on the Vacancies page on Konstfack's website.


Entry Requirements

You must meet both the general and the specific requirements in order to be eligible for education at research level [7 chap. 39 – 40§ HF]:

You meet the general entry requirements for education at doctoral level / third cycle level if you:
• have been awarded master’s degree/second-cycle level qualification, or
• have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded at master’s/second-cycle level, or
• have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad*

In addition to the general entry requirements above, the following specific entry requirements apply to the Doctoral Education in Artistic Practice in Visual, Applied and Spatial Arts:
• A minimum of 120 credits (or equivalent) must be in a subject of relevance to third-cycle/doctoral level studies in the subject Artistic Practice in Visual, Applied and Spatial Arts.
• Documented practical experience within a field of relevance to the third-cycle/doctoral level education.
• Documented writing experience within a subject area of relevance to the third-cycle/ doctoral level education.
• Documented knowledge equivalent to a passing grade in the subject English 6.

* Applicants who do not meet the formal eligibility requirements can request validation of their qualifications (equivalent knowledge). Knowledge, skills and abilities acquired through work, education or other activities can be assessed to see if the applicant has sufficient prior knowledge to be able to undertake the education. Such a request for validation of essentially equivalent knowledge is submitted as an attachment to the application, including a letter explaining your qualifications, as well as certificates and work samples that demonstrates the claimed knowledge.


Certify proficiency in English (equivalent to Swedish course English 6)

International applicants who obtained degrees from educational institutions where the main language of instruction is not English must submit a TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge ESOL test results.


IELTS

Academic modules
For course English 6: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5

Your test results will be verified online.


TOEFL

Internet based
For English 6: Score of 20 (scale 0–30) in written test and a total score of 90

Paper based
For English 6: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test, total score of 575

Note! TOEFL Examine Score Records or TOEFL ITP are not accepted!


Cambridge English Language Assessment

Cambridge English: Advanced (Certificate in Advanced English) or Proficiency (Certificate of Proficiency in English).

Pearson PTE Academic

For English 6: Score of 62 (writing 61).

Your test scores must be verified. Contact Pearson and arrange for them to assign your test result to“Konstfack. Please note that this process can take time, so arrange this as soon as possible if you already have test results to report.

Upper secondary studies

There are many countries from which you can meet the English 6 requirement with your upper secondary studies. Please email phdeducation@konstfack.se for further information about your country.


Exemptions

English language proficiency tests are not required for all applicants. Following applicants are exempt:

  • Applicants with a formal university transcript or degree certificate for their bachelor's degree where it is clearly stated that the language of instruction for the programme was English.
  • Applicants with a Bachelor's degree where English is the main subject.
  • Applicants with 60 credits from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland where the language of instruction of the course was English. The language of instruction must be clearly stated on official documents.
  • Applicants with 60 credits (with English as langauge of instruction) from Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, English speaking parts of Canada, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United Kingdom, USA.
  • Students with a 3-year Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish kandidatexamen) from the following countries meet the English requirement: Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
