Martin Gustavsson discusses his onging PhD thesis, Faggoty Brushstrokes in Motion, in conversation with opponent Marie Silkeberg. Silkeberg is an author and former Professor of Creative Writing at HDK/Valand, University of Gothenburg.

The conversation will be held in Swedish.

The starting point of Martin Gustavsson’s research project revolves around the production of faggoty brushstrokes and their legibility or transparency. Upon Gustavsson’s return to Sweden he was struck by the seeming absence of faggots and their traces, arty or not, in Stockholm. This absence led to questions around visibility and returns. The material presented at this second seminar is a text which could be seen as the beginnings of a book on the subject of faggoty art histories and the rewriting of those same stories. The writing is based in the experience of looking and painting. Painting and paintings make a platform from which to examine closer a faggoty history and aided by Didi Huberman and Ian White attempt to make the brushstrokes visible.

During the seminar we will discuss making visible of faggoty brushstrokes and what that might mean.

Above is an installation view from a presentation of a series of paintings entitled The Long Kiss earlier in September at Konstfack as visual material for the seminar

Participants in the seminar are welcome to contact Martin Gustavsson (martin.gustavsson@konstfack.se) to obtain the reading material before the seminar.
