Departing from research into regenerative materials from the bioregion of the Swedish coast, 2nd year students of the bachelor’s Programme in Industrial Design have developed design proposals for artifacts and systems that could help restore, clean and support a sustainable development of coastal environments.

In collaboration with researchers, organizations and experts within the field of sustainable coastal and marine development the students have in teams of three, during a 6-week module, investigated the regenerative potential of materials such as seashells, seaweed, reed, chitosan and chitin found in crustaceans, as well as land-based materials applicable in aquatic environments such as mycelium and lignin.

Exploring how these materials could be applied in designs that play an active role in restoring and regenerating natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity, the artifacts and systems have been designed from multi species perspectives, directed towards local actors and stakeholders to help raise the awareness of the problems and potential of coastal bioregions globally.
