Walter Benjamin argues that the 19th century development of material and structural possibilities of cast iron and glass, for arcades and winter gardens, were tightly integrated with an understanding of the experience of the interior. The curved arcade structures, "passage couvert", primarily over covered space, and produced interior passages through the city without an outside.
Interiors Non Stop symposium has a focus on interior shifts, duration and instability. This instability caused by acts of placing, displacement, replacement and reassembly of objects, furniture and entire interiors, makes the interior a live environment, continuously in production. These interior shifts; material, technological and organizational, parallel social changes and keep challenging the relationship between architecture, interior, the city and their materializations.
Interior Non Stop symposium is part of a symposia series that explore the manifold notions of interiors. Interiors and their materializations, interiors and their relationship to cities and societies, interiors’ politics, ecologies and economies, interiors’ histories and imagination, interiors’ atmospheres, are some of the many aspects that are investigated. The symposia are organized as a series of provocative statements, followed by a moderated discussion with national and international practitioners and academics.
