Appendages exhibit Gabriella Loeb’s first sculptural pieces from 2008–2013.
Gabriella Loeb, student at the Master's group Textile in the Expanded Field year 1, comes from the tradition of haute couture, a technique that she continues to work with in her art.
She creates unique sculptures out of textile; some of them hang directly on the wall, the three larger pieces stand on their own. The sculptures refer to the intangible space between what’s physical and psychological; as if the mind could shape the body in the way it shapes itself.
At first glance, they could appear to be coral reefs or maybe topography; a map over mountains, but at same time they look fragile as if made of meringue. On the contrary the sculptures are made of repetitive folds of textile that are sewn together by hand. Each piece contains a network of internal threads running through the body like nerve endings. After hundreds of hours of sewing, the textiles are formed into sculptures, assembled on to a metal armature and fixed with resin and white paint.
