Description
Carl-Johan Vesterlund has a Master of Architecture from KTH School of Architecture. Parallel to working at architecture offices in Stockholm and Oslo, and running his own design practice he has the past 20 years been teaching at KTH, Chalmers and Umeå School of Architecture. Carl-Johan is since 2022 a senior lecturer in design with a focus on sustainable development, Head of the master’s programme Design Ecologies as well as responsible for the courses with a specific focus on sustainable development on the bachelor's program in Industrial Design. Together with Professor Ana Betancour he runs the practice Urban + Architectural Agency, which works with initiating and consulting in projects and investigations developing strategies for sustainable urban planning, architecture and design. In his practice Carl-Johan has worked with connecting local, regional and global issues and perspectives on sustainable development, how we as designers can respond to these, and how this could be manifested in the design of artifacts and systems on a wide range of scales reaching from regional planning, master plans down to the design of buildings, interiors, furniture and speculative prototypes for future infrastructures. Carl-Johan is currently a PhD candidate for a Double Degree Doctorate at KU Leuven in Ghent (Belgium) and Chalmers University of Technology. The Thesis is focussing on how explorative design could support a socio-ecological development of coastal living environments departing from a multispecies perspective. How can we design infrastructures for new urban land-water relationships that could mediate between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems? The project has a transdisciplinary outlook working in close collaboration with marine biologists and other relevant experts.
