Ernesto Garcia explores the idea of "healing" embedded in the concept of repair

Repair of lounge chairs at Konstfack's café is part of Ernesto Garcia's PhD research on artistic grounds, titled "Something is Broken". It explores the idea of "healing" embedded in the concept of repair within interior architecture and furniture design.

The repair process was carried out collectively, beginning with a series of workshops involving participants from both within and outside Konstfack. Attendees were invited to take part in conversations, share knowledge and experiences, and contribute to the repair process through sketching, planning, and hands-on making. Following the workshops, the work continued during a three-week-long happening, during which Ernesto carried out the repairs on-site.

New cushions were made using existing, reused, leftover, third-sorting, and — in some cases — new materials, with careful consideration of durability and environmental impact. The wooden parts were cleaned with soap and water, then oiled. Corner protectors and leveling feet were added, and the table between the chairs was lowered to better suit the lounge seating.

The project will continue to follow how the repairs — and the lounge chairs themselves — evolve with use and over time. Ernesto also plans to create additional pillows using the discarded leather from the original chairs. These are expected to be completed in the autumn of 2025 and presented in an exhibition and seminar about the project.
