The drawings in this exhibition are studies based on Gothic architecture which is characterized by windows and facades with high arches as well as decorative details that merge geometric and organic patterns.
The style was popular throughout Europe from the 12th to 16th centurie, and was often applied to churches and castles which were symbols of growing economic wealth. The Basilica of Saint-Denis, near Paris, France is recognized in art history as the very first building to use the Gothic style specifically for the construction of its choir which was completed in the 12th century.
In Sweden, Riddarholmen Church is Stockholm's best-preserved medieval Gothic building. The drawings are Italian and were made around the middle of the 19th century. They are part of the Martin image collection in the library.
