From Photometric Measures to Light as a Bearer of Atmosphere

In her doctoral project, which rests equally on scientific and artistic foundations, Johanna Enger explores the measurable and immeasurable dimensions of light.

The point of departure is the recognition that the physical measures traditionally used to describe light quality are insufficient when it comes to capturing the perceived quality of luminous environments.

The project was initiated at Lund University within the field of environmental psychology, where Enger developed a method for measuring perceived light quality in spatial environments. In its current phase, conducted within the framework of artistic research at Konstfack, the work deepens into an exploration of light’s qualities as atmosphere, mood, and association.

The project brings together different epistemological perspectives: the scientific, with its emphasis on precision and reproducibility, and the artistic, which engages with the subjective, intuitive, and experiential. Under the project title In Search for the Measurable, the Immeasurable, and the Elusive Experience of Light, Enger examines how these perspectives can enrich one another and where their boundaries begin to diverge.

Discussant
Kevin Houser is Professor of Lighting and Human Factors at Oregon State University and Chief Engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. His research focuses on how light affects human perception, biological responses, and well-being, and how this knowledge can be applied in lighting design. He is an internationally recognized researcher and educator with over 150 publications, several patents, and numerous awards in lighting research and education.
