'Thrums, or, a paduasoy is a padaway is a pattisway is a poudesoy, or, the qualitative property of a sculpture produced by the labour of a handweaver"
Opponent: Professor Asier Mendizabal
NOTE: there are limited places for the seminar. Please email mathew.gregory@konstfack.se to register attendance and receive the seminar material.
In this seminar, Anne Low will be in conversation with artist Asier Mendizabal to discuss a series of new works produced as part of her PhD project Thrums. The conversation will be held in English.
Anne Low’s project Thrums works with the structure of fragmentation. Over the course of her PhD project, a series of fragments will shore up to produce a constellation of works and exhibitions. The central forces in Thrums are the leaps made between Low’s sculptural practice and her ongoing research as a hand weaver into the histories of hand woven textiles in Europe, during the period leading up to industrialization. It was during this era that the aesthetic labour of weavers was essential to the economies of Europe while also being a form of trade that is inextricably tied to histories of capitalism and it’s oscillating systems of value. The works that will be present and discussed in the seminar pose questions such as how subjectivity can be inscribed into cloth; what is the phenomenological effect of an artwork when its labor is sublimated; what are the aesthetics of value when textiles move through the vagaries of trade.
Please note, we invite those who will attend the seminar to view Low’s work in room A6 from 10-12 on 10 November, as to make primary the encounter with the work that will be discussed.
