Welcome to a series of lectures presented by CRAFT! Konstfack.

In this series of lectures, you will meet a variety of speakers from within the international field of craft. Both theoretical as well as makers point of view will be shared.

Hear a writer’s thoughts on how recent lockdowns has affected ways in working both on personal levels as well as for the whole community within the field of craft. Get a glimpse of an artist discovering an obsession, and how to develop a wide range of work within that fixation spanning through different materials and media. Alongside with the craft makers disclose connection with material and how to involve political and community orientation in an artistic practice. As if this wasn’t enough, we have also added a curator who will share experiences on exhibiting craft.

We happily welcome you to follow these lectures online via zoom.

Shadhin Kamruzzaman's artistry deals with the politics of environmental degradation and destruction, migration, social justice and local history. His participatory practice incorporates installation, performance, sculpture, painting, video, and public art interventions. In the last few years, the traditional crafts of his own region in Bangladesh, and their underlying relationship with its history in connection to the world, has become a major part of Shadhins artistic research and journey.

With the aim to create a model of ideal collaboration between rural and urban art practitioners that ensures a balance of influence in the artistic process, he founded Gidree Bawlee Foundation of Arts in 2001. The organization has been active in promoting community engaged arts in its truest form in Bangladesh through running several projects each year in the remote village Balia in Thakurgaon, in the Northwestern corner of Bangladesh, working closely with several indigenous communities. In Bangladesh, where contemporary art is totally based in the metropolitan cities and thus disconnected from the large number of populations who live in villages and their culture, Gidree Bawlee is setting an example of connecting our roots to our contemporary arts practice.

During the past years Shadhin have been developing artistic projects in collaboration with various communities around Bangladesh. His interested lies particularly in the numerous dimensions of relationship that is at play between the artist and the communities during the process. With key questions around the responses and interpretations from the audiences in terms of art in public spaces: how the community view, experience and share these artworks, and how the works connect with their own actions and belief.

Shadhin Kamruzzaman earned his MA at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University in 1999, and has since then worked as a freelance visual artist, based in Bangladesh.
