A talk by Julius Lehmann (CuratorLab 2020/21)

The event will be livestreamed on CuratorLab Facebook page.

Initiated in 1977 by Klaus Bussmann and Kasper König the decennial exhibition Skulptur Projekte has evolved into a testing ground for site specific public art in every decade. The development of sculpture and installation and the changing concepts of site and context specificity are not only reflected in the "Public Collection" of permanent works within the cityscape but also in the Exhibition Archives that give insight in artistic projects, non-realised proposals, the redefinition of curatorial practices and networks in the field of arts. The presentation will focus on the role of the archive as well as on present events in conjunction with the vanishing of Bruce Nauman's iconic Square Depression (1977/2007) in November 2020 and the planned relocation of the piece, due to the request for the grounds from the University.

Between 2017 and 2020 Julius Lehmann was Research Fellow at the Skulptur Projekte Archives in Münster. His work for the Archives has included the recording and processing of the archives between the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and the University of Münster as well as co-curating the archival exhibition “Work as Site” (with Marianne Wagner, 2018/19), organizing the film screening series “Exhibition in Film” (2019/20) and contributing to the catalogue “Public Matters. Debates and Documents from the Skulptur Projekte Archives” (Cologne: Walther König 2019). Within CuratorLab 2020/21 he is working on Sonsbeek 93 (Arnhem 1993), Die Endlichkeit der Freiheit (Berlin 1990) and ARARAT (Stockholm 1976).

Organised by CuratorLab at Konstfack in collaboration with Public Art Agency Sweden, Skulptur Projekte Archives, and Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm.
