Today, many designers claim they work with “empowerment,” yet questions arise how design expands the possibilities for agency and action in ways that produce civic power beyond the designated paths of consumerism. How does the manipulation of matter-energy operate in endeavors where people strive to “take power?” That is, how do designed objects and DIY practices bring politics into proximity, making people able to touch power as they challenge consumer, legal and political boundaries?

In this talk, Otto von Busch will present his ongoing research of how controversial “thing-power” is manifested in illegal DIY crafts of moonshining, lock-picking and hacking, but also the more explicitly political use of objects, capabilities and orgone energies.

Otto von Busch is Associate Professor of Integrated Design at Parsons, The New School for Design. He holds a Ph.D. in design from the School of Design and Craft at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He has a background in arts, craft, design and theory and many of his projects explore how design, and especially fashion, can mobilize community capabilities through collaborative craft and social activism.
