"My talk will be about the notion of translatability (as it was proposed by Walter Benjamin) and how it redefines the subject-object relation. I will elucidate the connection between Benjamin's concept and photogenically, the fundamental category and film philosophy in general. The Armenian film director Artavazd Pelechian's non-played cinematography is a good example. It is especially relevant for us, given its message against (Soviet) imperialism and its sensibilities that can be read in the light of present-day decolonialism."

Irina Sandomirskaja: Professor, Cultural Studies, Södertörn University. 1991 PhD in Linguistics from Institute of Linguistics, USSR Academy of Sciences, Moscow, with dissertation Metaphoric Emotive Verbs with the Semantics of Human Conduct. SCAS scholar in 1996-98. Has written several works on the history of linguistic practices, theories of mother tounge, and theory of translation, notably Kniga o rodine: opyt analiza diskursivnyx praktik ("A Book about the Motherland: Analyzing Discursive Practices"). Co-organized the research project "Cultures in Dialogue" 1998-2001 (Baltic Sea Foundation), and has organized numerous symposia, e.g., on national identities and cybernetics. She is interested in critical theory, theory of culture, Soviet cultural history and theory (literature, film); special interest — Walter Benjamin's thinking in art criticism and philosophic critique.

The Common Seminar series aim to provide a platform for a continuous and dynamic exchange on matters pertaining to research within Konstfack at large – senior researchers, faculty, practitioners, doctoral candidates and students – as well as with students, researchers and practitioners in affiliated fields and institutions. The Common seminar series is open to the public.

By "Common Seminar" we refer to a format where an invited seminar presenter, such as doctoral candidates, researchers and other experts, provides material(s) in advance, which should be carefully reviewed by participants before each specific seminar session. The seminar is focused on a critical encounter and discussion on the provided material(s).

Welcome to Konstfack the second public Common Seminars in rethinking research practices in Art, Technology and Design.
