Konstfack CuratorLab 2017/18 participants are pleased to invite you to a series of live events at Tensta konsthall and the Italian Cultural Institute.

Artists: Jeremy Bailey, BAÇOY KOOP, Marcus Harrling, David Horvitz, Johanne Lykke Holm, Marc Matter, Tris Vonna Michell, Pontus Pettersson, Antonio Roberts, Alicja Rogalska, Sally Schonfeldt, Sophia Tabatadze

The focus of this year’s collaborative research stems from unpacking the life and work of Alexandra Kollontai, a leading revolutionary and the only woman in the first Bolshevik government established after the October Revolution. Her radical ideas on ‘free love’, the family, sexual politics, communist morality and the idea that emotions can challenge social structures are being revisited again. Political movements that address gender relations and the connection between power and sex are leading the way for fundamental transformations of society.

At Tensta Konsthall, Curatorlab participants have drawn on this research to develop independent projects that comprise the public programme of Dora Garcia’s exhibition ‘Red Love’.

15 May, 4:30 - 7:30 pm, starting at Sergels Torg continues on the way to Tensta Konsthall
New Gospel is a radical feminist manifesto inspired by Alexandra Kollontai's writings and contemporary feminist theories. Written and directed by Alicja Rogalska, “New Gospel” will be delivered by performers - missionaries, spreading the news of a new kind of society to unassuming passers by. The performers will play the role of street preachers, but instead of proselytising the coming of Christ or the end of the world they will preach a post-gender, post-work and truly egalitarian society.

A B C is an exploration in text and its potential. Led by author Johanne Lykke Holm, the workshop draws from the character of the witch as an empowering feminist position that refuses stigmatisation and oppression by autonomy. Creating a safe space to explore, identify and enact the possibilities of the performative voice - a voice that is yet to claim its space. (Registration: Skyddad adress).

The Digital Domestic
The rapidly increasing development of the internet has led to a radical shift in the way that ‘the home’ appears today. The online domain continues to infiltrate the physical world, downloading itself into our homes through the ‘internet of things’.

Drawing inspiration from cultural theorists Hannah Arendt and Helen Hester, Antonio Roberts examines the impact of automation, smart devices and digital assistants on domestic labour.

Ask Alexandra
Being aware of historical and gender derived factors surrounding the life and work of Kollontai, to whom should we ask the questions that we still have about her? Wouldn't it be best to ask her directly? In “Ask Alexandra” Curator Lab participants will become part of the performance and together with general public will make direct contact with Kollontai through a performance comprising a séance, board game and family constellation.

Involucri pittorici rigidi - A Descriptive Evening of a Publication
The striking Italian Cultural Institute in Stockholm and its theatre were designed by Gio Ponti and Pier Luigi Nervi in 1954; two of the greatest exponents of Italian architecture and design of the twentieth century, becomes the set for a series of temporary interventions by artists Tris Vonna Michell, Marc Matter and Marcus Harrling. Working within this context, they begin with inspiration from the French avant-garde movement Letterism’s use of the act of ‘walking’ as a point of connection to language, voice, poetry and architecture. They will install and perform a series of displays related to concrete, visual and sound poetry that through storytelling, mise-en-scene, installation and sound lectures will reconstruct stories and fragments mixing fiction and reality.

Bodies of Water is a choreographic score written by artist/choreographer Pontus Pettersson and curator Hannah Zafiropoulos, taking Alexandra Kollontai’s writings on love and Astrida Neimanis’ Hydrafemininity: Or, On Becoming A Body of Water as a starting point for an embodied exploration into fluidity and being-in-relation. The score will be performed by a group of dancers throughout the exhibition space.

In the Frame of Love Letters
Drawing on dissident produced literature, Istanbul based BAÇOY KOOP (Printing, Duplication and Distribution Collective) present a new performance Sweet Confiscation, as part of the wider project Love Letters.

Inspired by Kollontai’s questioning of market based societal norms, Love Letters offers a collective critique of mechanisms of power that pervade today’s society. Works by Jeremy Bailey, David Horvitz and BAÇOY KOOP subvert modes of contemporary propaganda from different areas of daily life (online marketing, lectures, unsolicited-mail) to replace their usual seductive intent with generous, poetic acts of resistance.

Jeremy Bailey’s work The You Museum disrupts the usual intention of online banner advertising, replacing them with works of art on the user’s screen. Sign up at www.theyoumuseum.org to have your banner adverts replaced by purpose made works of art.

To You, the Wind, David Horvitz is reaching out to people by posting printed artworks directly into the homes of people living in the area surrounding Tensta Konsthall.

The Struggle within the Struggle
In her performance The Struggle within the Struggle: the Stockholm Chapter, Sally Schonfeldt calls for an action, appropriating the technical strategy of demonstrators manifesting in public spaces in which a megaphone is used to address those gathered marching or assembled on a particular site. She subverts the intended usage of this political tool by bringing it both into the exhibition site itself as well as into the public space. The artist questions the potentiality of language as political speech, not simply as a rhetorical device and declaration, but in terms of its performative and somatic quality encompassing the voice and (deconstructive) uncompleted gestures. This idea alone could be taken as a poignant symbolic for the actual content of her political speech – the under-recognition and relative obscurity within historiographical practices of the contribution of women revolutionaries to left-wing struggles.

Spacing Love – Decolonising Eros: The Politics of Love, Loss and Mourning of the Plural Performative by Dimitrina Sevova
We need a new space for love(s), of (a) decolonized Eros(es) that needs continually to be re-invented, re-constituted and committed to. Spacing is a concept that gives consistence to these ephemeral and temporally based practices, borrowed from Judith Butler and her conceptualization of love from the perspective of the affective politics of the performative, or the political affect of love – plural performativity.

This talk critically interrogates why and how love can be a self-organized power for a new politics of economic possibility and plural performativity. How does a political concept of love interact with ‘a politics of ubiquity’ and ‘a politics of place,’ and the performative actions that constituted a queer feminist critique of political economy, and open up a politics of economic possibilities and new political plural performative as a proliferation of difference?
