Bully Goes Fishing – Meanderings in Posthuman Design

How can we design with, and for, nonhuman subjects? What could a non-anthropocentric design practice be like? How can we put designerly skills and knowledge to use in prototyping less speciesist relations with our fellow critters?

In his PhD project "Living Things: Design beyond Human Exceptionalism", Erik Sandelin works in the messy intersections of design, posthumanism, biotechnology and critical animal studies. His research interests center on intimate entanglements of human and nonhuman lives mediated through digital, biological, and other technologies. Sandelin is currently probing this design space through interventions in everyday activities where we interface nonhuman lives, such as barbecues, recreational fishing, and allergic reactions.

In this seminar we will engage with three texts by Erik Sandelin:

1. Designer and Goldcrest – an illustrated storybook introducing some of Sandelin’s companion thinkers, through the perspective of a practicing designer. Available at www.sorgenfripress.se.

2. Bully Goes Fishing – a chapter for the upcoming anthology Design and Nature.

3. A status report briefly outlining and situating Sandelin’s research for this 25%-seminar.

Please contact Skyddad adress to get access to the the last two texts.
