The session will discuss Oliva Plender’s current research project “Many Maids Make Much Noise”, which is based at Open School East, an alternative art school in a community centre in London. The project’s starting point is Plender’s research into the East London Federation of Suffragettes, founded by political activist and artist Sylvia Pankhurst in 1913.

Through workshops and conversations with contemporary feminist groups in London the project explores the relevance of this history today. “Many Maids Make Much Noise” focuses on the symbolic idea of having a voice, making noise, the power of the collective to claim the right to speak and be heard in public and to shape history.
