Lena Séraphin will first discuss laborations in fictionality as an artistic practice that investigates fiction as a carrier of f/actuality. She will show images from two military archives, the Imperial War Museum’s photo archive in London and the Finnish Defence Forces’ photo archive, and talk about the installation Lena Séraphin, Andrea Meinin Bück & The Don Quixote Complex that parallels material from these two archives with a narrative about radicalization.

The second part of the talk presents performative readings of Replay, a work-in progress and an attempt to make a public place accessible in words. The setting for this collaborative work is an understanding of knowledge as something limited and insufficient, and that in addition to creating knowledges we also need to develop, learn and practice skills of sharing.

The presentation will be held in English.

Lena Séraphin is a visual artist based in Helsinki and guest researcher at Konstfack. Her practice consists of – collective – writings and visual works that place emphasis on display as a dramaturgic event. She holds a MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths' College (1997) and a doctorate from Aalto University in Helsinki (2017). Her dissertation The Don Quixote Complex and Investigations into Fictionality is based on observations on the artist herself as a varying assembly of roles, analysing the double as a figuration and an artistic device. This device is employed in order to make an attempt to present a photograph of a nazi march-past in Hanko, Finland, on the 2nd of June 1943 without elevating and reproducing absolute power.
