A Spring River Awakens a Sense of Longing

12 February 2021

Linda Hallstan, Sissela Jensen and Brit Pavelson, who graduated together from the Master's programme in Visual Communication in 2020, won the competition for developing the graphic identity for Konstfack's upcoming Degree Exhibition.

– In a time of isolation and lull, we have chosen to work with the spring river as an idea. The spring river is the hard, solidified ice that becomes the liquid, flowing waters. It is a movement and a power which is set in motion. The concept arises from a longing for smells, colors, sounds and movement to return. A longing to flow freely, both in body and mind.

In order for us to create flow in our work, we have used methods which involve the body in different ways – the headline is based on Brit's handwriting and the photographs are taken through a physical lens of water manipulated through movement.
Linda Hallstan and Sissela Jensen are based in Stockholm. Sissela works with photography, film and collage in different ways in order to create augmented realities. Linda works as a graphic designer and art director and is interested in how femininity manifests and is valued in form. Brit is based in Tallinn as a graphic designer. Through practicing ornamentation and its rituals, she seeks ways to create closeness in her design language.

Anne Klontz, the curator of Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2021 is looking forward to both working with the trio and discovering the possibilities of staging exhibitions in these challenging times.

– Despite the disruptions occurring in our everyday lives, we have the unique opportunity to learn and grow, and evidence of this has been flourishing at Konstfack through the emerging artists, craftspeople, designers and educators who continue to activate their practices. As a response to the students' efforts, the Degree Exhibition 2021 will be an important platform to support their achievements. With the Degree Exhibition 2021 spread out into four events in two places, I'm excited by the possibility to get really in-depth and to collectively discuss and develop the nuances that are unique to each group of students, and ultimately connect them together in order to highlight the diverse characteristics, knowledge and attitudes which are so integral to an exhibition.

Konstfack Degree Exhibition 2021 takes place 8 May – 6 June at Konstfack and Konstnärshuset.
