Welcome to an interactive seminar to discuss the future direction of design within research for sustainable development!

Stockholm Environment Institute started to engage with design as a human-centered research approach in 2015, primarily applying design-thinking to solving complex sustainability problems in the Global South. Through a series of case studies in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Colombia we have combined service design with more “established” social science methods including field experiments.

What have we learned so far and what should we develop further? How can we make the best use of design capabilities for sustainable development projects?

This seminar provides a unique space and opportunity to discuss these questions. Using two different cases of design-research collaboration at SEI as the foundation for discussion, we will draw out the insights and challenges we encountered in our exploration. Our aim is to gather ideas and reflections from you about the future of such transdisciplinary work for addressing socio-ecological challenges.
