Welcome to open lectures during the Interior Architecture Research Festival at Konstfack!

The IA Research Festival 2019 addresses how artistic research can engage with the accelerating crisis of global warming and the rapid decrease in biodiversity. On a daily basis, we witness extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels, drought in one location and floods in others, as well as an ongoing mass extinction. The planet as we know it is changing rapidly, and yet we are consuming more resources than ever before.

For Interior Architecture, Furniture Design and Spatial Design at large, the causes and consequences of the climate crisis are closely connected to the places, environments, spaces and furniture we design. In our work, we are often limited to activities, practices, situations and events connected to the current system – a system in collapse, characterized by human exceptionalism, ideas about endless growth and capitalism, known through terms such as the Anthropocene or Capitalocene.

During the IA Research Festival 2019, we will ask: how can a growing ecological consciousness inspire to new systems of thoughts that help us design in tune with the planet?

This year's workshop explores how Konstfack, from the perspective of how Interior Architecture and Furniture Design, can push design education and artistic research into such ecological transformations.

We will elaboratie with methods to produce a critique of our current system, raising awareness on its less visible aspects, and simultaneously explore ways of anticipating creative tools to respond and adapt to the increasing climatic crises. We will do this inquiring about our own educational methods critically in search for more ecologically integrated approaches where we learn how to engage, map and work as cultural producers. An ambition during the workshop is to define areas of research in relation to the climate crisis at large, as well as practical tools and concepts that could help us to reduce our field’s pressure on resources.

During the workshop we will be working with recycling and upcycling, compost and soil, and experimenting with bio-materials. We will address; Material -cultures, -flows and -depletion, spatial -practices, -activities, -situations, -events and natural phenomenon, process of inventory, assortment and documentation.
