Konstfack Higher Seminar with Johan Redström.

A while ago I wrote a book called 'Making design theory' exploring the idea that also design theory can be made, quite literally, and that there are reasons to consider aspects of the making involved in research through design as 'theoretical'. In this seminar I will introduce some of the basic ideas in this book in order to ground a discussion among the participants regarding how and why (or why not) we think and do theory, and what our options are as we look try to look beyond dichotomies such as theory vs practice.

Johan Redström is Professor at Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå University (Sweden). He has previously been Rector (Head of Department) of Umeå Institute of Design, Design Director of the Interactive Institute (Sweden), and Associate Research Professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen (Denmark).

He received his PhD from Göteborg University in 2001, where he also became Docent in Interaction Design in 2008. Combining research through design with design philosophy, he has done research in areas such as interaction design and emerging technologies, post-industrial conditions and sustainable design.
