Any program in visual communication, in a Western European context, aim to train the student’s ability to communicate or facilitate communication through a number of disciplines such as print making, typography, photography, film, video, illustration, animation, paint, sound and so on.

The ability to be fluent in a wide range of technical skills and of thinking-through-making is required. What is rarely required however, is the knowledge on how inclusion and exclusion is produced through the line of design choices. This lecture will discuss the role of visual communication in social transformation and how we can rethink teaching practices.

Johanna Lewengard is professor of graphic design at Konstfack.
