Welcome to our higher seminars in Rethinking research practices in Art, Technology and Design with Luis Berríos-Negrón and Frederik Tygstrup.
Session 1: Presentation and discussion
Report on the social pedestal: Phenomenotechnics of intransitivity and neguentropy that emerge from greenhouse parastructures
Luis Berríos-Negrón with Frederik Tygstrup
During the Higher Seminar we will consider the irrational reflex of post-fact resistance by first reviewing recent writings on "social infrastructures" by Lauren Berlant and Fredrik Tygstrup. The material will then be parsed by returning to the works of cultural theorist Esther Peeren, artist Paul Ryan, and philosopher Bernard Stiegler and their concepts of spectral metaphor, intransitivity, and neguentropy, respectively. In doing so, I hope to provide lateral perspectives that may provoke discussion about how to reconsider Marxian models of structure/superstructure/infrastructure, and consider how these unforeseen "parastructures" may be concatenated to sidestep this counter-intuitive-counter-intelligence that is now amongst us.
Session 2: Lecture/discussion
"The Work of Art: From Fetish to Forum"
The talk will be a discussion on the agency of art, focusing on the role of art in the formation of social communities, and on how we might develop aesthetic categories to understand the relationship between art and democracy. Some of the thoughts in the talk refer back on my text “The Technological Unconscious”.
