There are many ways to define one's role in the world of design and today, more than ever, designers are simultaneously fulfilling the role of producer. A playground of possibilities has emerged where one can find a diverse range of self-initiated projects from starting an Internet business, a magazine or even a publishing house and many designers are able to do this inexpensively through today's digital technology. We are curious about why there been an increase in designers working as producers. Is it a result of designers managing their own businesses and wanting the freedom of choice from idea to finished product?

Most often we hear about the exciting success stories related to this role, but could there also be negative aspects? Could the unstable economy and limited employment opportunities in the field have a direct affect on the role? Most importantly, what affect does the role of designer-as-producer have on the design process?
