Plots Prints Projections
Through a series of plots, prints and projections the exhibition at Serra dei Giardini engages different perspective on the challenged role of architectural representations and the projection and materialization of these architectural worlds into built form, in the meeting with the manufacturing industry and the dynamic material wood, specifically pine. In response to the main theme of the Biennale Architettura 2018 – Freespace, the exhibition Plots, Prints and Projections, investigates architectures generosity and ability in mediating between the abstract and concrete, between the physical and the digital, the artificial, fictional and the real. These entwined relationships continue to produce sensibilities where our understanding of the division is becoming blurred.

The climate-controlled environment of the 19th century greenhouse of iron, cast iron and glass, Serra dei Giardini, acts as the context of departure for the exhibition. At the outset iron was made to perfectly imitate wood, and “techniques of wood construction were simply transposed to iron”.  This instability in the reading of a material, pose questions about materiality and its inherent qualities investigated in the exhibition. If a greenhouse concerns a regulated climatic condition for optimizing growth of specific plants, forestry, for the production of timber, is defined as a science and craft of creating, managing, using, conserving, and repairing forests. The cultivation of forests and the use of wood in architecture continue to have cultural, physical, social, political and ecological implications.

The exhibition consists of large scale spatial installations or structures, an artificially controlled climate or atmosphere and a garden pavilion or loggia that will serve as a stage. Through spatial sequencing, nearness and proximities of the projects, the exhibition aims at producing a dialogue between the different spatial structures and installations and their materiality.

Greenhouse Garden – Reflect Project Connect is a collateral event initiated by Architects Sweden, Folkhem, Swedish Wood, hosting partner Microclima, promoter Swedish Institute. A Swedish event consisting of an exhibition, a temporary wooden pavilion, by In Praise of Shadows architects, and a series of seminars and workshops on architecture, the built environment and the global goals of Agenda 2030, as well as how architecture and wood can be part of it.

Press opening on Thursday 24 May at 17.30, Sierra dei Giardini, Viale Giuseppe Garibaldi, 1254.
Open to the public from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 28 November 2018.
